Very good switch but could be better
I've installed 4 of these so far during our house renovation. I originally wanted to replace the dumb switch with something modern and came across these during Prime day.Packaging is excellent, so were the instructions. It came with a pair of batteries and fixings as well which was VERY handy. It does require a hub to work, unlike some other Tapo products that only rely on wifi. I already had a Tapo H100 hub so didn't need a new one. Quality is generally ok, albeit a bit platicky. One of the switches had a bit more travel than the other, I had to put some foam tape on the button to correct it.Installation is split into two parts: pairing and wiring. I'm a DIY enthusiast, not an electrician so before I got to wiring I did a lot of googling and most importanly, took a few pictures of wiring behing the existing switch.Pairing was a breeze, there is a latch under the switch, once moved to "open" position the front plate comes off revealing the battery slots and the "reset/pair" button. I put the batteries in, opened up the Tapo app, choose the switch I wanted to add and there on the app showed step by step guide to completion. It took no time to connect it to Tapo hub.The wiring part was also much easier than I thought. It doesn't require a neutral, which means it draws power from the included batteries instead. I made sure the main switch was off and used a mains tester to make sure it really was off! I then turned it back on to use the mains tester to confirm the live wire, turned electric back off to take wires out of the old switch and put the Live one in the LIN slot and the load one in the Lout1 slot. I did need go buy some spacers as the backbox turned out to be too shallow. You can see it in the picture.Once all that was done, I turned electric back on, pressed the switch and to my surprise it worked! Compared to other wifi smart devices, these switches seem to work much faster via the app. I suspect it's because the hub is making communication much easier and straight forward. Pressing the switch, the lights come on immediately without delay just like a normal switch. The switch makes an audible click/clunk noise when you turn it on, as if it's physically turning the switch on. Which is a good thing because one of my bug bears with smart bulbs is that they don't work when there's no internet. These switches however work fine without internet, as long as there are batteries, you can physically press the switch to turn lights on.Overall, very happy with the switches. I've mainly used them where there are multiple lights involved, dining lights kitchen lights etc. Much more practical and reliable then using loads of smart bulbs. There are some cons though.1. No status light, I understand it's not drawing power from mains but in this day and age, they could have used a very faint led as a status light. Would have looked nice, would come in handy in the dark as well.2. Altough the switch looks like you can click the entire face, only the bottom half is clickable. Very much like my old macbook!3. There are no 2 way wiring option. For kitchen and dining it was ok but for the hallway 2 way switch was a must for me. The only way I could do it is by grouping two switches and automation in the Tapo app so that one switch turns the other on and vice versa. (see app screenshot and video. Excuse the mess). If you're a competent electric DIYer, I don't you don't need to wire in the second switch at all. Just connect the wires with some wago and the second switch should just work. Although it works, they drawback is that it takes a second for the lights to come on as one switch has to ask the other to turn on as well.Would I buy them again? Not at full price. I'd like a status light and the option to wire in Neutral and get rid of the batteries.

I recently installed the Tapo Smart Light Switch, and I couldn’t be more pleased with it. This smart switch has truly transformed my home lighting experience.

First off, the setup was a breeze. The Tapo Smart Light Switch comes with clear instructions, and the entire installation process was straightforward. It connected to my Wi-Fi network effortlessly and synced with the Tapo app without any hiccups. The app itself is user-friendly, making it easy to control the switch remotely and set schedules.

The value for money is outstanding. For a relatively affordable price, you get a smart switch that offers reliable performance and a range of features. The ability to control my lights from anywhere, schedule them, and even use voice commands with smart assistants makes this switch a fantastic addition to my home.

One thing to note is that you’ll need a neutral wire for installation, which is common for smart switches. Also, depending on your setup, you may need a control module if you’re integrating it with existing systems. However, the benefits of having a smart, controllable light switch far outweigh these minor considerations.

In summary, the Tapo Smart Light Switch is an excellent investment. It’s easy to set up, offers great value for money, and provides enhanced control over your home lighting. If you’re looking to upgrade to smart home technology, this switch is a fantastic choice. Plus, Amazon’s efficient service made the purchase process smooth and hassle-free.

To save energy, I am looking for the smart switches to avoid forgeting to turn off my lightings when I leave. Searching online for a long time and very glad to see the TP-Link Tapo is extending their smart home product family. I am using Tapo plugs and cameras. It is reliable and easy to use. So I bought this one to have a try. After one week usage, I can leave the comments here:
Pros: easy to install with no neutral wire required so I just need to install it as a normal switch; real smart to include the remote control, voice control, schedule (which is really what I need); an unifyed smart home system - I learned from TP-Link website about the 'smart action' to control all my Tapos together; battery included and able to be replacement looks a safe design.
Cons: I need to buy a hub Tapo H100 (DON'T FORGET IT); it costs but fair to try more sensors to have one HUB only; smart action is not easy to understand, you need to learn more from their web or ask their tech support.

My house wiring is the old type, no neutral wire, so this switch is just what I needed. And it works with Alexa which gives me the control as well. I have a room with 3 doors but only 2 switches so with this switch I can just tell Alexa to turn on/off the lights. No more walks across the room in the dark.
Now for some gotchas you need to be aware off.
First and the biggest, is that the back of the switch is deep, see the photo. It's 25mm deep which means that you will probably need to replace the back box as there isn't enough room for the switch and wires. I replaced my 15mm back box with a 47mm deep box. This means it's not a 5 minute job to replace the switch.
The other negative is the screws used to clamp the wires are rubbish. It's hard to tighten the screws as the head doesn't fit crosshead or flat screwdrivers very well
On the up side the device pairs easily and quickly to the Tapo hub and works well with Alexa.

I saw a one-star review where someone was saying they couldn't get this wired in. It's because it's NOT a 2-way switch and they didn't do their homework. Meaning, if you can control your light from more than one light switch, this is NOT compatible. 2 gang means 2 switches. 2-way means compatible with lights which can be turned on and off from 2 locations. So 2-gang 1-way is perfect for the likes of a living room for say, a ceiling light, and uplighters. For me that's the case in two rooms. You might have a kitchen with one switch for the ceiling light and another for downlighters. If you have two switches for the same light then this will not work.

I have a few single and dual gang versions of these around the house and the next ones I buy will be for the kids' bedrooms.

PRO TIP! If you have Tapo bulbs in your lamp fittings, you can set it up so that your light switch will turn on / off your ceiling light and your lamps at the same time. In my scenario I have a double gang Tapo smart switch in my living room. One is for the ceiling light only. One is for the uplighters. I programmed the one which controls the uplighters to also turn on the bulbs in the lamps around the room. So either I tell Alexa to turn on the uplighters or simply press the button, and hey presto, nice and gentle lighting all around the room - perfect!

While I find that TP-Links wifi routers are terrible, their smart home devices are superb. I'm going through the slow transition of making the switch away from plugs and bulbs on Chinese brands using "Smartlife" and going fully TP-Link for ease of use and compatibility.

Biggest cons for me would be the depth these units require but in most cases you can work around it with a space exander as many others have done and taken a photo of on these reviews. And the other con would unfortunately it doesn't look like a 2-way switch will be on the way any time soon, if ever, which is a real shame. I'd also love a 4-gang switch but alas, I don't foresee that happening either.

It is a device that connects easily and the installation is perfect because it does not require a neutral wire. It is worth mentioning that if your socket box is not deep you will have to make some changes because you need space behind the switch. Otherwise I have nothing to complain about. I have already ordered others after testing.
